JOURNALING: 4 Action Steps for Achieving a Goal

Monday, January 23rd I shared social media content related to10 Benefits of Journaling associated with emotional intelligence, the practice of self-awareness, and mental health. Today's blog post is addressing how journaling can be used for setting, executing and achieving goals.

'I need to begin doing today what will help me become who I envision myself to be in the future.'

STEP 1: IDENTIFY THE GOAL

Using a journal to help you set goals and work to achieve them helps with keeping you from trying to keep it all in your head. An encumbered mind is unable to think creatively and it becomes more difficult to receive clarity, because you are overwhelmed, stressed, and weighed down by a multitude of thoughts and emotions. Journaling helps you to empty your mind that allows you more room in your mental space for clarity, creativity, and confidence that you can see clearly to accomplish what's in your heart to do. This is the practical application of what is written about 'writing the vision down and making it plain.'

STEP 2: DETERMINE THE ACTION STEPS TO HELP ACHIEVE THE GOAL

Taking the time to think critically and strategically about what the tasks, or action steps, are involving the goal is critical in ensuring you are able to follow through and finish what you started. I always explain to my coaching clients that once the goal is identified it no longer becomes the goal. The goal becomes the action steps and tasks related to helping you achieve the goal. The bigger the goal, the more complex the action steps become. This is critical to understand and is part of the reason why we sometimes fail to follow through and finish what we started, because we don't plan adequately enough and neither are we fully understanding what the process and commitment is in order for the goal to be accomplished. Strategic planning is a critical component to goal setting, progress, and success in achieving a goal.

What is not within us will definitely be developed as part of the process of pursuing our goals and dreams as we learn to be faithful and committed in our pursuit.

STEP 3: CONSIDER THE CHARACTER ATTRIBUTES REQUIRED TO FOLLOW THROUGH

Once the goal is identified and the action steps established consider the character attributes vital to ensuring you follow through and stay the course until the goal is actualized. Attributes like focus, persistence, perseverance, adapt, evolve, etc. As I journal about what I'm seeking to accomplish and what is required of me in the process I will include the attributes I think are necessary for me to employ to ensure I execute and maintain commitment to what the process requires of me. This process has helped to reinforce that the consistent practice of writing, reading, and verbalizing out loud as a prayer helps me to remember and eventually adopt the attributes as part of my personal character moving forward. It helps me to say, 'I need to begin doing today what will help me become who I envision myself to be in the future.'

STEP 4: NOT ALL GOALS ARE PHYSICAL DESTINATIONS AND LOCATIONS

Whether your goal is to write and publish a book, launch a business, get married, be the best version of yourself as a mate, employee, or grow spiritually, change is necessary. Understanding the need to adapt, evolve, grow, be transformed is critical and essential to that process. Learning to be resilient, courageous, confident, humble, patient, prayerful, hopeful, determined, to display grit or tenacity are essential qualities to one's character in order to see the fulfillment and experience the enjoyment of what you pursue. What is not within us will definitely be developed as part of the process of pursuing our goals and dreams as we learn to be faithful and committed in our pursuit.
